Paul Revere’s Rides
A talk by Lee Vincent, Groton-Ledyard Rotary Club, April 1, 2003
Who was the man named Apollos Rivoire?
Of course he is mostly remembered for being the father of Apollos Rivoire, Junior. So who was Apollos Rivoire, junior?
Apollos Rivoire, Jr., was quite a horseback rider. (Recite the trips from David Hackett Fischer’s book, Paul Revere’s Ride, page299.) That includes six, s-i-x round trips to New York or Philadelphia. This must have been one of the most hard-assed Americans that ever lived. And during April, 1775, he made three trips on horseback from Boston to Lexington and Concord – one of them after midnight.
Now of course many years before these events, Apollos Rivoire had changed his name and his son’s name to Paul Revere, because, as Paul the younger said many years later, “it was something the bumpkins could pronounce.”
